Castle Rock Starry Sky with Bob Coates

Words and Photos by Bob Coates

Bell Rock Vista – Village of Oak Creek, Sedona, AZ

Using the Platypod as a secondary tripod, I popped it on top of a small fence post to get the composition I wanted of Castle Rock with the stars above. I shot a time-lapse with my Lumix GX85. Making a time lapse has the benefit of allowing you to choose the frame or frames with which to make a still image.

In the case of a night time time-lapse, many times it is necessary to blend more than one image together in order to have detail in the foreground, as well as a nicely lit starscape. In this case, I used an image after the sun broke the horizon to add detail to the foreground.
