1000 Merits: A PPA project with Eddie Tapp

As a life member of Professional Photographers of America (PPA), I’ve had the honor of dedicating my entire professional career—over 50 years—to the craft of photography. Along the way, I’ve volunteered, competed, mentored, and shared knowledge in countless ways, earning merits with each contribution.

Last year, I received an unexpected letter from the PPA president informing me that I had surpassed 1000 merits—a milestone achieved by only eight other photographers in PPA history. To say I’m honored would be an understatement.

To commemorate the moment, I created this image in my office using two Westcott CineFlex lights (1x2 and 2x2) and separated the diffuser to achieve a pure white reflection on a mirror flex (plexiglass) background. I used my 50mm tilt-shift lens for precise perspective and sharpness, paired with wireless camera control via my iPad.

The entire setup was made possible with Platypod gear—my go-to for creative mounting solutions. This included the Platypod Extreme, four Mini Super Clamps, and several Goosenecks (because you can never have too many!).

This image represents not just an achievement, but a lifetime of passion, perseverance, and community.
