01 | EXTREME PANNING THROUGH ELITE LANDSCAPES WITH DAVE WILLIAMS

Ever since I first held the Platyball Elite I was intrigued at its ingenious design. Itโ€™s a re-invented ball head, turned on its head to allow stable panning. Iโ€™ve put it to the test a few times but on a recent trip to Iceland I've since found a perfect location to use the Platyball Elite and Platypod eXtreme in tandem to capture a sweeping landscape.

Iceland is my favorite country on earth and itโ€™s packed full of incredible vistas. This particular location, at the end of a twisting, gravel mountain road, is Icelandโ€™s second highest waterfall, Haรญfoss. A short hike at the end of the road leads to several spots that give spectacular views of the waterfall and the river that flows from it, and itโ€™s this view I decided to take advantage of.

Simultaneously our friend and fellow photographer Peter Treadway made the 25 km trip on his custom self-built 7-pound carbon fiber bike, planning to meet us for a breakfast snack. Everyone wanted to be back before 11 AM to view the funeral on TV.

The New York Times photographer and Platypod aficionado Andrew Scrivani demonstrates how food looks best when itโ€™s lit from the side or from behind with a diffused lighting technique. Heโ€™s also added in just a little bit of reflective film as well. Here heโ€™s paired the Platypod Ultra with the Benro IN00, a square jellyfish smartphone holder and his iPhone to capture a platter of freshly cooked meatballs.
